INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE

Why Are More Barristers Moving Chambers?

In recent months, we have seen a marked rise in barristers exploring moves between chambers and here at EJR, we have assisted 6 barristers in the last 5 months in a lateral move – a shift that’s becoming hard to ignore. But what’s driving this trend?

1. Practice Diversification:

Barristers are increasingly looking to broaden their specialisms; whether that’s moving from crime to financial services, or branching into areas like crypto, ESG, or international arbitration. Moving to a more specialist or progressive chambers can open new opportunities and client bases.

2. Fee Growth and Work Quality:

Chambers with stronger marketing, better practice management support, and higher-value work are naturally attracting ambitious barristers wanting to push earnings and build their reputations.

3. Work-Life Balance and Culture:

Post-pandemic, many barristers are prioritising better work-life balance and chambers that align culturally with their goals. Whether it’s more flexible working, modern leadership, or a collaborative environment.

4. Strategic Growth From Chambers:

Chambers themselves are proactively hiring, recognising the value of adding lateral talent to strengthen practice areas and win new instructions. This creates more opportunity for those open to a move.
